If you happen to go for a vacation in the capital, don’t fail to include Manila Ocean Park in your itinerary.
It’s amazing, having a marine life attraction in one place, and everything else followed; a hotel, souvenir shops, bars, restaurants (we ate at Gerry’s Grill), coffee shops, gadget stores, apparels, ice cream parlors, etc..
They are the first marine-themed park in the Philippines (they say) with attractions like the Oceanarium (a breath-taking marine life exhibit with 5,000 varieties of marine creatures from around 300 species), the Marine Life Show (with the South American Sea Lions), the Jellies (jelly fish), the Fish Spa (I haven’t tried it though, don’t like the idea of the fishes nibble away dead skin on your hands and feet), the Musical Fountain Show (hide your Cams, you’ll surely be wet)….and many more.

But better to go there on weekdays, the weekends a bit overcrowded.
Oh, and did I mention the jelly fish? It’s like dancing sea fairies. Very hard to capture it on Cam with very limited light, but it pretty sure is recorded in my mind; exciting, enticing, and enriching.

Whenever we have a trip, he gives a score. He is rating it with numbers one to ten; with ten the best fun he has.
Eating a Burger is 1 point, playing computer games is 2 points.

This one, according to him; is 10 points.

Toledo City, Cebu, Phil.

Had a chance of passing through Toledo City last Saturday morning, from a whole night of wake in Pinamungahan.
I got to see the city at dawn; still with few people around. There were a couple of joggers in the plaza and a handful of women walking to the church for the dawn Mass.
This city which is located in the west coast of Cebu has no rotating brown-outs I supposed. The big power plant in Sangi is very visible from the city’s boulevard/seawall/pier which by the way is an excellent place for early morning walks and the classic painit of “Puto and Sekwate”.

Carcar, Cebu, Phil.

It's always a pleasure and pride to see and shoot the Kabakaban Festival in Carcar.
Me, being a true-blue Carcaranon, it's a joy to see very familiar faces in the crowd enjoying the festivities. Since the Kabkaban is also the major activity of the week-long celebrations of Carcar's Fiesta, many Carcaranons who are living in other parts of the country, and abroad, who go home to Carcar to see this event.

It was not easy keeping up with my younger colleagues, but I made it again; climbing the (as they say) highest peak in Cebu. Thanks again to Lance and the Obiedo brothers for hosting our trip last October 27 and 28.
My first time to this place was 2 years ago; it was easier back then. But with the added pounds and 2 more age-years; whew!!
Don’t get me wrong though, the pounds and the age is just an excuse for being the last person (most of the time) in our group to reach the two summits. Climbing a mountain this high is very rewarding; the intense feeling when you are in the top, air blowing in every direction, the fog, the coldness, the scenery, the scenery and the scenery! It is still soooo worth the sweat and the muscle cramps.

Oh, did I mention the Sinugbang Baboy, a bottle of The Bar and Dindong that we had in the camp? Yayii; added pounds again!
And yes, the playing of cards; Tong-its!!! Ahe he.

It was just a one night camp, left the mountain at 6 am to proceed to Kawasan Falls, Badian.

Going down the foot of Osmeña Peak, I told Her that I will be back. Probably after two years again and with my three boys then. But for sure we will not have sinugbang baboy (which was very hard to cook in a foggy environment) and liquor. Probably we will fry pork steak in a gas-fueled stove, peanuts, ice tea and Gatorade, and a Chess Mat.

And possibly some hotdogs, and marshmallows (cliché).

“In this time of darkness, there are two ways of spreading light. You may either be a candle, or the mirror that reflects its light.” - Ninoy Aquino

The Photographers Club of Cebu organized a "photoshoot for a cause" for the benefit of the victims of typhoon Ondoy.
It's PCC's way of being a "candle" to our unfortunate kababayans in Luzon who are presently in a "time of darkness".

The UPVCC Office of Continuing Education & Pahinungod (OCEP) celebrates Press Freedom Week with "Representing History And Culture : A Lecture on Photojournalism And Cultural Photography" with Guest Speaker Veteran Photojournalist Mr. Alex Baluyut.

My son’s school, with it’s aim to equip the pupils more knowledge of the Cebuano Culture and Heritage by visiting different Cebu Landmarks, they initiated an Educational Field Trip last August 29, 2009. The activity is also to reinforce the regular classroom instruction.
The P900 (for me and him) bus fare and entrance fees of various museums and parks was a little bit heavy though but I like to see my Kinder II enjoy the company of his classmates in a field trip and unlike his grade six older brother; this boy of mine is not camera shy.

To reinforce the regular classroom instruction, my son's school, with it's aim to equip the students more knowledge of the Cebuano Culture Heritage by visiting different Cebu Landmarks, they initiated an Educational Field Trip last August 25, 2009. I always support these kind of programs since not only I work in a private school and do understand the principle of it; the father in me likes to have quality time with my Son and see how he enjoy traveling with his classmates. Never mind the P900.00 for the both of us, well, its an airconditioned bus around the southern towns of Cebu and I had fun chasing him, convincing him to pose for decent shots.

If a picture paints a thousand words is true, then I should have written a book describing last Sunday’s homecoming activity. But I couldn’t find the right words to begin with or the right adjective to be exact.
I was thinking of “energetic” or perhaps “entertaining”., well as the writer Enrique Vila-Matas wrote; “A man could spend ages not writing even a single line because he was searching for an adjective.”
But then, that will be too long for me to share these pictures with you....

To all Catherinians around the globe; happy viewing.

It is Malapascua's first festival; a street dancing around it's capital - Barrio Logon, and dance competition in consonance with their annual Fiesta.
The term lawihan or the "Lawi" is attributed to the famous Thresher Shark which is very abundant in the waters of Malapascua. Aside from the white sand beaches, divers and tourists around the world frequents the place to see this shark "that has a curved elongated upper lobe on the tail" - thus boosting the island's eco-tourism industry which the people of Malapascua is very thankful for.
Malapascua is part of Daanbantayan; a town located in the northern tip of Cebu, Phil.

Barracuda

naa pa ba kahay barakuda nga kahadlokan karon?

nakahikap pa ako maski gamay ra kini intawon.

Kay sa kanihit sa isda karong panahuna,

maski barracuda; tadtaron ug isugba na.

Last Wednesday, November 14, I attended a seminar in UPVCC entitled “Mga Hulagway sa Kaniadto” (Preserving Memories Through Photos) which was sponsored by Central Visayas Studies Center in line with the University of the Philippines’ 100th anniversary preparations.  Besides being interested in history and the Cebuano language, I was enticed to attend the seminar because of its main speaker, Dr. Noel Ponce.

Dr. Ponce, who was fondly called Noel during his high school days, is three years my senior.  Being one of the closest friends of my elder sister Galina, who is also a doctor now, Noel used to frequent the house at that time.  Though he admitted to have been very passionate in the field of history since high school, his mother wanted him to take up medicine.  Presently, he is one of the leading doctors in Cebu in the field of geriatrics.

After medical school he pursued his love of history along with his prolific practice in the medical profession.  He is now the president of his hometown’s Sibonga Historical and Cultural Heritage Society.  Proof to his immense love of history, Noel holds a substantial collection of old photographs dating back to the 1900s.

Looking at Dr. Noel’s LCD presentation of the photos accompanied by an eloquent narration, I was transported back through time.  There I saw Cebu’s oldest buildings, ladies with large “bistidas” and men with white “ternos.”

As I was reminded of how photos can very well preserve memories, I thought of going home to my grandparents’ house and retrieve some of their old albums and photos, not to be used for my own LCD presentation but to be kept and preserved for the family’s future generations.

Though the seminar took half a day of my time, I never regretted joining it.  Through which I had a peek of what life was 100 years ago and hatched a definitive plan for the future; that is, to capture memories for my own children through photos.
